Editorial Review:
Amazon.com Review: Ideal for a household with a large cat or more than one cat, this big, self-cleaning litter box eliminates most odors while keeping the litter pleasingly fresh for tabby. It's ingenious in design: a cat entering the box triggers a sensor; the sensor sets a timer that counts off 10 minutes; then a rake runs through the litter, scooping out clumps and depositing them in a plastic container at the box's end; the container is automatically sealed until the next cat visit, when the raking cycle opens the container for another deposit. (Twelve reusable, disposable containers are included, each 13 inches long, 4 inches wide, and 3-1/2 inches deep.) The litter box can be plugged into a wall socket (AC adapter included) or operated on eight D-cell batteries (not included). It comes with a durable carpeted ramp that leads a cat into the box and cleans its paws on the way out. For safety, the rake stops and reverses at the slightest touch if an object gets in the way. If a cat re-enters the box before the initial 10 minutes have elapsed, the timer automatically resets. The litter box is made of hard plastic and measures 29 inches long, 8-7/8 inches high, and 16-3/4 inches wide. For proper operation, it requires premium, clumping litter but does not need as much as a nonautomated litter box of the same size. For cleaning, the litter tray can be detached. Instructions for acclimating a cat to the box are included. --Fred Brack

My Littermaid finally broke after 3 years. Pretty good lifespan I think. I decided to try a different automatic box with a better design. Mistake. I will go back to the Littermaid Mega that works consistently better than the others. See all the tricks I've learned to make it a better box at the bottom of my review.
Pros:
Had one for 3 years and know it works.
Rakes the sand flat and scoops most of the debris consistently.
You can use a plastic grocery bag in the ... Read More

I suspect that people who complain that 10 minutes isn't time enough for clumping are allowing their cats to eat an inappropriate diet, resulting in messier stools. In this case, no clumping time is adequate. On my vets advice, I feed only dry food and stools are firm. Urine, of course, clumps immediately if you use a premium clumping litter as directed. Littermaid is not infallible, but it is a big help.

This is the third Littermaid I've purchased. I've been very pleased with the first two cat boxes but this one is not what I expected. Littermaid has changed the quality of the recepticles boxes. The box will not stay in place thus kitty litter and waste go everywhere. The recepticle tops are horrible. I have to TAPE the cheapo lid to my cat box. I do re-use my boxes but I did that before with my two previous cat boxes and did not have a problem. The quality of this new cat box is not as good as ... Read More

Do you have a pile of used litter at the very front of the pan? Most likely if you are having problems with this product you've put too much litter in the pan. If you don't think that is the case your little kitty has piled all the litter in the front. My little darling was doing this to the pan for weeks before I figured out that I needed to use less than the recommended amount of litter.
The motor isn't strong to prevent injury to the kitty if for some reason they are in it when ... Read More
