Rectangular shape Yard
I have a yard that is rectangular in shape and I wondered if the Pestafe wireless fence was the best solution. After doing a lot of research I decided to use it over other systems that require you to bury wires in the ground. One of the main reason of not choosing the other systems is because of reports of dogs digging up the wires (Which I almost sure my dog would do).
Setting up the fence in a rectangular shaped yard.
It took me approximately 1 1/2 hour to 2 hours to get the fence setup. The main challenge was to get the pet area to fit correctly in my yard. This was a challenge due the containment air being a circle and my yard being rectangular.
My yard has a small fence on each side which my dog jumps easily. So what I decided to do is to set the pet area little beyond my yard boundary to the each side of the house. To the back it stopped almost at the very back of the yard and at the front it extended little outside of the gate. This setup worked best for my situation.
Training
It took less than a hour for my dog to understand how the wireless fence worked (Keep in mind he is easily trained). What I did was take him to the back of the yard beyond the petsafe area let the collar go off and then pulled him back into the safe area. This was repeated a second time. After that anytime he hears the collar beeps he turns around; I am almost sure it only shocked him twice.
He use to Jump the side fences which he no longer does. Now remember the persafe are extends beyond my side fence however my dog nows that anytime he jumps the fence and wonder a little beyond the fence the beeping starts; so he no longer jumps the fence. He now stays in our yard where he hears no beeps; with the exceptions of extreme back of the yard where he never use to venture.
Conclusion
This is a great system that can be used with rectangular yard if you take time out to setup it up. This includes setting up the transmitter in the correct location in the house and adjusting the safe area to the optimum setting for your yard. It is perfect for dogs that are easily trained however it maybe a little challenging or not suitable for stubborn & slow pets.

This seemed like the perfect system to replace my broken in ground system.
After the easy setup the collar would correct in the house at random places. My dog (border collie)was going nuts. The transmitter was at least 25' from any metal object and there were no appliances nearby that emmitted EM signals
I removed the collar and called customer support.
Petsafe quickly replaced the collar and I still had the same issues.
I removed the collar and left it on a living room table 20' from the transmitter and the collar would still receive a correction several times a day.
I called tech support, again, and was told that'the collar is not designed to be worn in the house' This statement does not match any of the advertising or the owners manual for this system.
After another contact with Petsafe They have agreed to replace the wireless system with an inground system, which I will have to install.
I would have given the wireless system a 1 rating but Petsafe has done what I asked and agreed to exchange the product

We are on Day 3 of the IF-300 and it is working very well. The manual outlines a 14-day training programme but it took our two dogs just one afternoon to learn the system. There is thick vegetation surrounding our house and it was somewhat challenging laying out the flags, so we did not attempt the training exercises in the "bush". As it happens, the dogs are figuring it out for themselves. One thing we did not expect: the two collars do not have the same sensitivity. However, the flags seem to provide sufficient visual warning to make them both hesitate. We are working on how best to deal with taking them past the flags for a walk. I would definitely recommend this product to anyone who wants to contain their dog without the hassle of trenching.
Update: We have been using the system for almost nine months and continue to be very satisfied with its performance. We have not had issues with thunderstorms (as others have mentioned) but do need to pay attention to the battery life of the collar. One of our dogs will always test the system and will take advantage of a 'low battery' situation, so watch out for that. Also, the varied sensitivity of the collars has not been a problem. Our dogs do pay attention to the flags and the auditory warning received when getting too close to the boundary. Overall, the product is well worth it.

We have the old IF-100 we got 6 years ago. We love it. We put it in our walk-out basement and the radio frequency extends well out into our 2 acre yard. If the power goes out in your home, it will shock the dogs, so be sure to put it on a UPS and take the collars off of them when they're inside or sleeping.
It beeps first as a warning before they reach the edge, and one shock is all it takes to teach them. We didn't do the little flag training thing and the dogs did fine. We have used this with two shih tzu's and a corgi. I put the shock on my leg and accidentally on my hand and ouch. OUCH!!!!!!! It's quite the shock. I'm sure it works great for big dogs too. I feel sorry for them getting that pain on their neck, but if they aren't stupid and go by the beep, they won't get shocked.
When we first got it, the collars seemed to have a lot of problems and we've had several replacement collars back then. No cost to us.
Another time, both collars didn't work, we emailed them and they sent us an entire new unit with two collars, just in case it wasn't the collars and was the unit.
They've always been very very very good about their warranties and product replacement even when we weren't in warranty! But that was back in the first year and a half.
This is now many years later and the second set of collars and entire unit they sent us, haven't had any problems. One of our dogs loves to swim in the pool and pond and her collar no longer shocks, but just beeps. She needs a shock, the other dog it only takes a beep, so we switched their collars. But meanwhile, support says to just reset the unit in the basement. They're supposed to be water proof. So we're going to try that. But I imagine if that doesn't work, they'll be shipping us a new collar because they just are great about that.
So the IF-300 must be fantastic compared to our old IF-100.
Oh yeah, and our neighbors have one of those electric fences you bury in the ground, and they are constantly having the guys out to fix them. Digging up their yard, fixing them, etc. Messing with their landscaping. We've had no problems like that.
In fact, our dogs wont' leave the yard even without the collar, (well right away, it takes them several days to realize they can get beyond their boundaries, they test them accidentally going beyond I think). When we want them to leave the yard on walks, we have to pick them up and carry them over the edge of the yard.

So i came on to amazon and saw raving reviews about this product. I have a dog that when spooked ( by lightning or near by military base blasts ) he gets very scared. If no one is home to let him in he jumps my fence and takes off.
Im not sure if most people that bought this have either a large yard/lot that there house sits in or are on a ranch because it definitely seems to work funky in my house. I set it up in the middle of the house against the back wall so i could focus the radius of the fence range towards the backyard. I played with all the settings as per the manual and im unable to get it to work properly. If walk clear across the house out the garage and to the middle of the street the beeper goes off.. but if i go in the back yard i can hardly get to my back fence which is about have the distance to the street. Deciding to settle on this weird ellipse i then proceeded to try it out with my dog. First attempt to get him at the edge of the range worked as designed and my dog retreated into the garage where was safe... but then as we walked around in the garage and back in to the house TOWARD the base unit it occasionally beeped indicated the dog was at the perimeter again... and continued to scare my dog into thinking a shock was coming. Also if you have a fence line that you want to get your dog to stay away from this product is not for you.. obviously i should of figured that i cant use a circular wireless wall to cover a square lot...I dunno if mine is faulty but im returning this thing tomorrow
