This odd-looking tool did what I needed it to do. I found and repaired 2 underground breaks in my 1,000 feet of wire. The 2 separate tones were never very clear and I did have to fiddle with the FM frequency quite a bit to get it to work properly, but there are no other tools out there that I have seen that could do this job.
I will be more careful next time I aerate!

This item is a MUST for troubleshooting a break in buried pet-fence wire (considering the undesirable alternatives). We had a nearby lightning strike that caused a break in our pet fence, somewhere around ~1 acre. With this device, my son and I were able to locate the break within a few minutes. I wish the two tones were much more distinctly different. (You get one pitch tracing the wire from one side of the transmitter and a different tone tracing the wire from the other; thus, if you go around the perimeter and the tone changes to the second one, you know you have passed the break.) If the tones were even more distinct, I would have given this 5 stars. Even so, listen carefully and this will be an indispensable device for its intended purpose.

This saved me a ton of time. I found and repaired the break in my underground fence in less than a half hour.

I tried to detect break and could never determine where break was. I was afraid of this and should have sent it back. Just tried again yesterday and all I could hear was static and had a good idea of where break was. I finally run a piece of wire across where I thought the break was and spliced the line. It worked fine, only too much work to bury line again. I thinking of cutting the line just to see what the 2 tones sound like. I hate I spent the money for this product. Need a video with sound of where breaks are so people will know what to listen for.
