This is one of the few 'toys' that truly fascinated our 2 cats, and kept them running and entertained for as long as we used it versus playing with other toys for a few minutes before getting bored. We've never seen them more mesmerized by this, especially when slowly moving across a wall or ceiling out of reach. After we'd stop, they'd be wide-eyed waiting for it to reappear, or searching for where the light went.
My wife was concerned this was causing a mental trauma. We spoke to a couple vets who said this is perfectly fine and stimulating entertainment both physically and mentally and not to worry.
The problem with this product is two-fold:
a) the batteries run out quite quickly, and they are not as easy or cheap to replace as other laser pointers that use rechargeable AA or even AAA batteries, so look for those instead.
b) the flimsy made item's button broke within a few months of light usage. cheap to replace the item, but you may replace it often.

This product is cheap and works great. My cat absolutely loves it! I use it everyday and the beam is very strong.

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R2US34S87A7PH0 Although she is an indoor cat, my cat is a stalker. She loves to sit in the window and stalk birds or stalk the sunlight that comes through the window. She especially loves playing with her Laser Pet Toy. She can certainly use the exercise!

My cats go crazy over this and go into play mode as soon as they see us pick up the laser. It really gets our fat cat moving and exercising like nothing else! It's not durable, though, and after only a few days' use the button is starting to short out. But for the price (I found it at Walgreen's for $4), you can't expect too much in the way of quality.

Two of my three kitties love chasing the laser. The dot is the favorite shape to chase. It is a great way to keep indoor cats active.
